A LEGO enthusiast’s keen eye has spotted a tantalizing surprise in a LEGO Store in China. The LEGO Ninjago Micro Ninjago City (40703) is a scaled-down rendition of a LEGO Ninjago set, set to be the next highly sought-after gift-with-purchase (GWP) set.
Dylan Chow, a fervent LEGO fan, took to Instagram to share our first snapshots of the LEGO Ninjago Micro Ninjago City (40703), setting off a whirlwind of excitement across the LEGO Ninjago community.
Unveiling the LEGO Ninjago Micro Ninjago City (40703)
This latest and exciting gift-with-purchase (GWP) gem boasts a compact yet intricate design, comprised of 339 pieces. As of now, the pricing criteria for securing this treasure trove is yet to be revealed.
Essentially, the LEGO Ninjago Micro Ninjago City set stands as a scaled-down iteration of the majestic Ninjago City (70620) released back in 2017 and featured in The LEGO Ninjago Movie. A sneak peek at the box art at the back reveals silhouettes teasing three micro-sized promotional sets, hinting at an immersive saga akin to the Houses of the World concept, promising periodic Ninjago GWPs throughout the year.
Exploring a Micro Ninjago Universe
Based on the box art for the Micro Ninjago City (40703), other upcoming micro collectibles may include the Micro Ninjago Docks, drawing inspiration from the awe-inspiring Ninjago City Docks (70657) from 2018 showcased in its tie-in animated film. Accompanying it is the Micro Ninjago Gardens (40705), reminiscent of the smaller-scale yet equally captivating Ninjago City Gardens (71741) from 2021. Finally, set 40706 stands as the Micro Ninjago City Markets, a compact counterpart to the expansive Ninjago City Markets (71799) from last year which is also the latest in the series of larger-than-brick life scale.
Dylan Chow’s revelation about spotting the Micro NINJAGO City on the shelves in China’s LEGO Store sets off a series of speculation regarding its availability—will it be individually purchasable or will it be a series of highly coveted gift-with-purchase sets?
Products labeled with the 40XXX numbering scheme often walk the line between standalone purchases and promotional giveaways. However, signs point towards this potentially evolving into a promotional gem, following in the footsteps of last year’s Houses of the World series—a fresh quartet of collectible freebies earmarked for release across 2024.
The Micro Ninjago City GWP Sets Off Other Possibilities
Upon a closer inspection of their scale, these miniature wonders align closely with LEGO’s marketing strategy as seen with its offering of the Houses of the World collection. One can speculate that they might require a single-receipt purchase of $250 or more—a rather high price point to secure this collectible. As it seems, LEGO still aims to capture the hearts of the adult LEGO fan community, especially those who grew up with the LEGO Ninjago theme.
So what do you think of these latest micro series? Are you willing to spend almost 1,000 USD in LEGO to get all four micros-scaled GWPs? Let me know in the comments below.
