Each year two solstices occur, one in winter and one in summer. The solstice is the day with the least amount of daylight in the winter and the most amount of daylight in the summer. The Northern Hemisphere (meaning you live above the equator) experiences its summer solstice in June and winter solstice in December. The Southern Hemisphere (meaning you live below the equator) experiences its summer solstice in December and winter solstice in June because the seasons are opposite!

Winter Solstice has been celebrated around the world for thousands of years. Monuments have been built to showcase the sunlight when it lines up perfectly on these two days. The winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere will occur December 21, 2023, and you can celebrate the occasion with your Six Bricks!

You can use a Discover More set, other LEGO® or LEGO® DUPLO® bricks, or you can choose your own building materials for these short, fun activities for the whole family.

  • Build it!: Create your own monument using your six bricks. Think about where the sun will line up with your monument.
  • Say it!: Describe to your friends or family what your monument is and where the sun will line up.
  • Copy it!: Recreate someone else’s monument. Can you think of a way to combine your two monuments?

Take your play a step further by adding these activities and playing the Discover More Game, adding new building materials, expanding your builds, and coming up with your own activities playing together however your family likes to have fun.
