76962: Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus Set Review

Ever since Jurassic Park stomped into cinemas in the 90s, it created a wide-spreading universe which has encompassed multiple sequels, video games and animated series. Following the events of Jurassic World, Netflix introduced an animated series called Camp Cretaceous. This followed a group of kids who were on the same island as the beleaguered dino theme park, who were left behind when things went wrong. The show inspired several LEGO® Jurassic World sets including one of the latest, due to be released next month. Here’s a closer look at the Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus set.

In Camp Cretaceous, the kids are left to fend for themselves and come face-to-face with several dinosaur species. Most of them pose a danger to kids but they do befriend one who ends up joining them on their quest for survival in Isla Nublar. In the first season of Camp Cretaceous, an Ankylosaurus egg hatches early at In-Gen’s lab and imprints itself on Ben, one of the kids left on the island. The two remain close throughout the show’s story.

Baby Bumpy is a brick-built character unlike other dinosaurs in the LEGO Jurassic World sets. It’s almost built like a car, with the inner section of the dinosaur hiding a moveable plate which connects the tail to the head. This allows Bumpy’s head and tail to be moved. Both ends of this section also feature hinged connection points so they can positioned in different ways and be moved from side to side.

Bumpy’s turtle shell-like body is achieved with sloped bricks and plates angles on hinges plates. The spikes found on an Ankylosaurus’ armoured shell are simply cheese slopes. The jade green and brick yellow elements perfectly captured Bumpy’s appearance. Unfortunately, the black connectors used in the legs do awkwardly stand out.

Bumpy is depicted as a friendly creature in Camp Cretaceous and that has been replicated in this set. Her face allure cuteness and considering the small scale of the set, it’s nicely detailed. In addition to the dinosaur, the set features some plant-based food, which can be placed in Bumpy’s mouth. I like it when themes try something new and after the T. rex skull and fossil set earlier this year, this is another fun little set, which offers something different.
