On the surface, this set may seem the least Animal Crossing-like LEGO® set. It’s not based on a particular location of the game nor can be perfectly captured in the game. But it’s actually more connected to the set than it seems. Birthdays play a fun role in the Animal Crossing games. Not only do you celebrate your birthday in-game, but your fellow villagers each have a birthday and you can party with them on their special days. This set is the smallest of the current wave and celebrates, villager Julian’s birthday.

As with all of the LEGO Animal Crossing sets, Julian’s Birthday Party is crafted from a series of island plates. These represent different pieces of land, in the case of this set, an outdoor party area. The builds are fairly basic, with a party table featuring a colourful cake and some wrapped presents. Players of the game will know, that your island will feature on a particular tree and these can also change depending on the seasons. This set offers a pink Cherry Blossom tree. Technically, if Julian is celebrating his own party, Cherry Blossom shouldn’t be blooming yet, as his birthday is in March and the Cherry Blossom Season starts in April. But that’s being super nerdy. The use of island plates to build the different sections of the set, allows it to be configured in different ways, although it’s a little trickier due to the bunting.
Julian is a fairly new addition to the Animal Crossing line-up of villagers. He first appeared in New Leaf and is described as a smug horse. He’s technically a unicorn as he sports a horn on his head. Although he first arrived in the DS version of the game, in minifigure-form he is wearing the Space Parka from New Horizon. Julian is also the only minifigure to use the standard legs. This makes it a taller character as the games often similarly portray horses.
It’s not my favourite of the Animal Crossing sets, but I like that it represents a much-loved feature of the games. Plus it features another unique tree and as Animal Crossing fans will know, you have to have all the different trees in your village if you want to make more Bells and create different furnishings. Julian’s Birthday Party and other LEGO Animal Crossing sets are available now.
