It’s almost a given that every major movie released is also given the honour of having a LEGO® set inspired by it. That’s certainly the case with Warner Bros.’s upcoming Dune sequel. Although many films inspire various LEGO builds, it’s not very often we get to discover what the creative behind these films think of their work inspiring LEGO sets, that is until now. Thanks to an interview by io9 with Dune and Dune Part Two director, we know exactly what Denis Villeneuve thinks of the Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter set. “Probably I’m making movies because first I was a hardcore LEGO player. I’m from that first generation where it was just bricks, right? I went to a lot of places with those LEGO spaceships, boats, or whatever. And when I learned that LEGO was doing an Ornithopter, I was like, ‘Wow.’ That blew my mind.” Then just before Christmas, the director was informed that the set was ready to go and was disappointed to learn it wouldn’t be released in 2024, adding “Then, at Christmas, I got a box and they’d sent me a prototype,” Villeneuve said. “I would say I had a blast doing the Ornithopter… It’s amazing.”

It turns out Denis Villeneuve isn’t the only one impressed by the set, actor Stellan Skarsgård, who plays the larger-than-life Baron Harkonnent, was shown his minifigure counterpart, commenting “he stands out”. The Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter is available now from LEGO.com and selected retailers.
