If You Have The Credits, This LEGO® TIE Interceptor Variant Is Straight Nasty

I see LEGO® TIE Inceptors are trending again — let me put you on to this beast. The LEGO® Black Ace TIE Interceptor is one of the best of the best. With a design that comes from many different Star Wars themes, you can expect to pay a premium on this LEGO® build.

Let’s Break This Review Down Into Three Parts:

  • The Design
  • The Build
  • The Minifigures

But Why Does It Look Like This?

Griff Halloran, a former Imperial Navy pilot, modded the heck out of this TIE Interceptor to make it a fearsome combat aircraft and podracer. He used this vessel to patrol the cosmos when he transferred his skills over to the New Republic. Honestly, it kind of looks like a LEGO® Jedi Starfighter had a baby with an TIE Fighter.

Considering you have never seen a LEGO® TIE Interceptor design like this, the scoring is easy to judge here.

The Design: 9/10

What’s It Like As A LEGO® Build

This set dropped in 2019 at $49.99. Fortunately for us, it only appreciated in value by roughly $10-$15, depending on the platform from which you buy it. It is equipped with some excellent details, and with 396 pieces, you are looking at roughly one hour of build time. It appeals to a slightly younger crowd and has a unique playability angle. The wings fold in standard LEGO® Star Wars X-Wing fashion.

But my favorite part? The cockpit. It has a double-folding action to it: The front translucent TIE glass piece folds downward and the top compartment comes up. Essentially, the cockpit opens up like a mechanical mouth for you to put a LEGO® Star Wars pilot inside.

The Build: 7/10

What About The Best Part — Those LEGO® Star Wars Minifigures For The Ace Interceptor?

The three minifigures (two unique to this set) drive up the price:

LEGO® Minifigure Griff Halloran: While he has a fun grey LEGO® hairpiece, this minifigure is pretty standard. I will say that the printing for the TIE pilot suit on the torso is pretty awesome. (Unique to this set)

LEGO® Minifigure Poe Dameron: Easily, he is the best minifigure in the entire set — especially, because he has unique torso and leg LEGO® printings you will not find in any other set. Also, the scruff on his LEGO® headpiece is a super authentic touch. (Unique to this set)

LEGO® Minifigure BB-8: Although not unique to this set, you can’t go wrong with the roly-poly BB-8 minifigure. It is not like they will make more of them — hopefully, they do decide to continue Rey’s story so we can get a few more BB-8s in production.

The Minifigures: 8/10

Is This LEGO® Black Ace TIE Interceptor Variant Worth The Buy?

For either LEGO® investors or LEGO® collectors, this set is a steal. Mostly because it has two unique minifigures and a LEGO® design you can’t find anywhere else. Lastly, it has only appreciated $10.00, so you won’t spend an arm or a leg purchasing it!

Fans agree: It has some incredible moving details, like the mechanical cockpit and folding wings. Plus, it has a playability angle that not many sets have out of the gate.

With a total score of 24/30 this TIE Interceptor LEGO® set is a certified Baumlinks buy!
