In this article, we’ll look at some of the current top, popular, best and bestselling LEGO themes to collect and invest. We like these LEGO themes and think they are some of the coolest and best selling themes of all time ever released in the world. Great for collecting and investing.

For ranking purposes, we only looked at existing LEGO themes that are currently available as of March 2025.

LEGO Shop at Home (USA | Canada | UK | Australia) carries many of these LEGO themed sets. However, only the most recent LEGO sets are available for sale. Most of the featured set images that we have shown in this article are still currently available for sale at the regular retail prices at the official LEGO Shop at Home (USA | Canada | UK | Australia).

Some themed sets may exist for many years, but the very old ones may not be available anymore after it has been retired. You may need to purchase it in secondary marketplaces. With that said, prices may be very high for discontinued and retired LEGO sets.

Perhaps, one of the best LEGO themes would be LEGO Adults Welcome 18+. There’s some overlap with some of the LEGO theme categories. Sets range from various themes like LEGO Star Wars, Harry Potter, Icons, IDEAS, Super Heroes and more. This is by far one of the best category of LEGO sets out there. The sets are usually big and are like models.

Top 12 Popular, Best and Bestselling LEGO Themes

12) LEGO City Theme

LEGO City is a classic original LEGO theme that has been around for a long time. It originally started as LEGO Town before being rebranded later on to LEGO City.

LEGO City themed sets typically feature police, fire, airport, construction, trains and various other city elements. There is definitely something for everyone. The majority of us live in Cities and Towns so we are definitely familiar with many of the LEGO City themed toys.

Every year, LEGO releases many LEGO City themed sets through multiple waves throughout the year.

11) LEGO Minifigures Series Theme

The first LEGO Minifigures Theme Series started in 2010. It was LEGO 8683 Series 1 Minifigures and a full set contains 16 minifigures.

As time went on, LEGO started including licensed minfiigure series including 2012 Team GB London Olympics, Marvel Super Heroes, DC Comics Super Heroes, Looney Tunes, Harry Potter and more. The licensed themes for LEGO Series Minifigures are typically quite popular.

The minifigures per each complete set no longer became the standard 16 minifigures. Each LEGO minifigures series could vary. However, note that each LEGO Minifigure Series sells each random minifigure individually. LEGO typically does not sell a complete set. However, other secondary marketplaces may sell complete sets but at a higher price.

In recent years, LEGO started selling these series minifigures in individual cardboard boxes. They used to be in plastic packaging.

10) LEGO Harry Potter Theme

Harry Potter fans would definitely love the JK Rowling LEGO Harry Potter themed sets. There are many scenes and buildings that have been made into LEGO sets such as Hogwarts Castle, Hogwarts Express, Hedwig and more.

With the success of LEGO Harry Potter, this theme is most likely going anywhere for the next several years.

Shown below is LEGO Harry Potter 76453 Malfoy Manor. This set was released in January 2025.

The majority of the LEGO sets are meant for kids. However, they do have some larger models geared towards an older audience such as 18+ LEGO Harry Potter 76444 Diagon Alley Wizarding Shops.

With the LEGO Harry Potter theme, you can spark your imagination and creativity in the fantasy world of wizards.

9) LEGO Super Heroes (Marvel/DC Comics) Theme

LEGO Super Heroes has always been a favorite for kids. LEGO has licenses for both Marvel Super Heroes and DC Comics Super Heroes. This means they have a wide range of LEGO sets that they can make.

Shown below is LEGO DC 76303 Batman Tumbler vs. Two-Face & The Joker. This set was released in January 2025.

Marvel though is now owned by Disney as they purchased Marvel Entertainment in December 2009. From Batman, Spider-Man, Avengers and more, you can recreate your own LEGO Super Hero play adventures.

8) LEGO Ninjago Theme

LEGO Ninjago was a theme created by LEGO in 2011. LEGO continues to produce new LEGO Ninjago sets. It features a Ninja storyline in a fantasy world where Ninjas fight evil.

The theme has playsets targeted towards boys. Larger and more detailed sets would definitely be a great set to collect and invest.

Perhaps one of the most popular LEGO Ninjago sets would probably be the LEGO 71741 Ninjago City Gardens. It was released back in January 2021 for LEGO VIPs Early Access (now known as LEGO Insiders) or in February 2021 for the general public. Although it is branded as a 14+ LEGO set, they could have branded it as an 18+ LEGO set as well considering the amount of details and pieces in the set.

Shown below is LEGO 71741 Ninjago City Gardens. This set was released in early 2021.

The most recent large LEGO Ninjago set being released is LEGO 71837 Ninjago Dragons Rising City Workshops. This set was just released in March 2025. With so many pieces, minifigures and play features, both kids and adults would enjoy it.

7) LEGO Technic Theme

LEGO Technic theme contains sets that usually have more challenging and complex builds. They are geared more towards older kids, teenagers and adults.

LEGO Technic sets typically don’t really have LEGO minifigures as well. Instead, they make great display pieces after you finish building the toy. As such, adults would usually prefer this theme more than kids.

The LEGO Technic theme typically feature various vehicles, aircraft and boats. Some of these LEGO Technic sets can be motorized with LEGO powered functions as well.

Shown below is LEGO Technic 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine. The set was released back in January 2025.

6) LEGO Star Wars Theme

LEGO Star Wars is a licensed theme originally licensed from Lucasfilm. Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney in 2012. This means LEGO Star Wars is now licensed and owned by Disney. LEGO Star Wars started in 1999 and the license was renewed multiple times. We don’t expect LEGO to drop this license anytime soon. The theme is one of the most popular licensed themes LEGO has.

That said, LEGO probably has to pay very high licensing fees to Disney. LEGO Star Wars kits typically sell for a lot higher compared to regular classic themes from LEGO. Combining popular LEGO brick pieces and minifigures with the Star Wars franchise is definitely a partnership win for both Disney and LEGO.

Shown below is LEGO Star Wars 75394 Imperial Star Destroyer. The set was released in August Summer 2024.

LEGO Star Wars sets range from the classic Star Wars movies (Episode 1-9), The Clone Wars TV Animated Series, The Mandalorian and The Child and more.

There are also several 18+ and Ultimate Collector Series LEGO Star Wars sets that are targeted towards adults as well. With that said, they also have LEGO Star Wars sets that are for kids and teenagers as well.

If the LEGO Star Wars sets are recommended and branded as 18+, they definitely go a lot higher than what we currently rank LEGO Star Wars as. They can fetch for high sums of dollars in the aftermarket. This is especially true if the 18+ LEGO Star Wars set is based on a popular ship or vehicle and is highly sought after.

5) 18+ LEGO Architecture Theme

LEGO Architecture theme contains sets that are famous monuments and attractions all around the world. They could also be various major city skylines.

These LEGO Architecture sets typically do not have any minifigures as the build is primarily focused on the building/attraction.

LEGO Architecture sets make great display kits. However, they usually don’t have much playability after you have finished building the set. As such, adults would probably be more interested in these LEGO Architecture sets.

4) LEGO Creator 3in1 and Creator Expert Theme (now known as 18+ LEGO Icons)

LEGO Creator theme features LEGO Creator Expert and LEGO Creator 3in1.

LEGO Creator 3in1

The LEGO Creator 3in1 sets are usually for younger audience like kids and teenagers. They feature 3 different build models in 1 LEGO set. As classic LEGO sets based on original creativity, they are highly popular.

Shown below is LEGO Creator 3in1 31170 Wild Animals Pink Flamingo. This set was released in March 2025.

LEGO Creator Expert

The LEGO Creator Expert sets are primarily targeted towards adults and those that are aged 18+.

LEGO Creator Expert are the more popular sets among adults. They feature LEGO modular buildings, vehicles, winter holiday themed sets, attractions and more. LEGO Creator Expert contains sets that are licensed and non-licensed.

In 2022, LEGO Creator Expert theme has primarily been rebranded to 18+ LEGO Icons.

Shown Below is the discontinued and retired LEGO Creator Expert 10255 Assembly Square Modular Building. This set was first released in 2017. LEGO Modular Buildings are now branded as 18+ LEGO Icons.

3) 18+ LEGO Icons / 18+ LEGO Hard to Find

18+ LEGO Icons theme was mainly launched in the 2022 year. They consist of many 18+ LEGO Hard to Find sets that are targeted towards the adult LEGO fans. The sets are quite detailed and very realistic.

LEGO Botanical Collection for example contains various 18+ LEGO flower sets. Great for display or just putting in a vase.

Shown below is 18+ LEGO Botanicals 10344 Lucky Bamboo. This set was released in January 2025.

Other popular 18+ LEGO Icons Hard to Find sets include LEGO Modular Buildings, different ships, vehicles and more. It is important to note that 18+ LEGO Icons sets (especially the large sets) are typically only available for purchase at LEGO Shop at Home (USA | Canada | UK | Australia) and physical LEGO Brand Retail Stores for the first few weeks. Afterwards, they become more widely available at other online retailers.

You may sometimes be able to find these large 18+ LEGO Icons sets for sale at other physical brick & mortar stores. That said, they are more rare due to the size and the amount of space they take up at the retailers’ shelves.

Most 18+ LEGO Icons sets sell quite well. Although, there are still a few exceptions.

2) 18+ LEGO IDEAS Theme

LEGO IDEAS initially started off as LEGO CUUSOO. It was later rebranded as LEGO IDEAS. Basically, users submit their LEGO project creations to the LEGO IDEAS site. If the project reaches 10 000 supporters within a certain timeframe, it goes on to the LEGO IDEAS review stage.

A few projects are then selected from LEGO at the LEGO IDEAS review stage. They would then become official LEGO IDEAS set. These winning and approved LEGO IDEAS sets would then be sold to the public.

The original LEGO IDEAS set creator receive 1% of the product royalty net’s sales. LEGO IDEAS sets could be licensed or non-licensed. They are primarily recommended for those that are aged 18+.

LEGO IDEAS toy products are great LEGO themed sets to collect and potentially even to invest in. We have a LEGO IDEAS section where we have articles on the latest LEGO IDEAS project creations that achieved 10 000 supporters, approved LEGO IDEAS creations, new LEGO IDEAS sets and more.

Shown below is 18+ LEGO IDEAS 21356 River Steamboat. This set releases in April 2025.

1) LEGO Bricklink Designer Program Series Theme

LEGO Bricklink Designer Program contains multiple series of limited production LEGO sets.

Sets that have been approved go into crowdfunding. Eventually, a total of five official LEGO sets based on the fan creations are offered. The sets that received 3000 or more pre-orders will be produced as official LEGO Bricklink sets. LEGO usually offers up to 30 000 copies of each set. It is a one time production run so the sets will be very limited.

The sets are sold on LEGO Bricklink Designer Program site. Note that the pre-order time window usually last only for a few weeks and popular creation sets do sell out fast. The LEGO Bricklink Designer Program Series checkout and shipping process is fulfilled by LEGO Shop at Home (USA | Canada | UK | Australia).

We chose LEGO Bricklink Designer Series Program sets to be the #1 top LEGO theme because the LEGO sets are fan designed project creations that are voted by LEGO fans. In addition, they are only produced in a one-time production run only. As such, these sets are very limited.
