When we checked in with  Louis of Nutwood last week, the builder took to the seas on itty bitty sailing ships. This time Louis puts those ace LEGO skills to work at colossal scale with the impressive Fortress of Hyrrefur. The castle features distinctive brickwork that incorporates SNOT techniques, profile bricks, and sloped corners for an impressive chiseled look. That intricacy extends to the rocky base with nary a foothold for would-be invaders.

The fortress is even more impressive up close.

Louis tops each tower with a wooden parapet. It’s a technique that I much appreciate in heavily grey builds like this, allowing for more color variety even while sticking to natural materials like wood and stone. (I’m reminded of these parapets from n.o.l.d.o.r last year). The wall walks and towers are manned by soldiers wearing the dark green of the Kingdoms era Dragon Knights.

The back of the castle is cut away to reveal a blacksmith and stairways connecting the various levels.

I enjoy this last shot of a lone warrior approaching the fortress via bridge, his fur cloak contrasted with that course brickwork. Who is this white-haired stranger and what does his arrival portend for the keepers of Hyrrefur?

Louis’ fortress was built for the Colossal Castle Contest XXII, the annual competition held by  Classic-Castle.com.
