For many students, the first time they encounter the concept of subtracting a fraction from another fraction can be very confusing. This method, modeling with plastic bricks, breaks down the steps and makes it easy to understand.

The modeling technique clearly shows the meaning of fraction, and also uses the colors of the bricks to show that the denominators are the same. These seemingly small details really help students grasp the concept of what it means to subtract one fraction from another.

The method works well for students new to subtracting fractions, or for those who haven’t been able to learn the concepts through more traditional curricula.
