As well as allowing LEGO® fans to realise their dreams of being a LEGO designer by turning their ideas into LEGO sets, LEGO Ideas has also been the source of several GWP sets. Over the last few years LEGO Ideas has transformed several smaller fan designs into promotional builds. The latest of those fan designs to become a GWP set is the ‘Books Are My Passion’ set, which will be available next week. Here’s an early look at this fun little new set.

In late 2023, LEGO Ideas launched the Me, Myself and I Challenge to create a set inspired by 11:11 or Singles’ Day. Fan builders choose a variety of subjects to inspired their entries but the winning design came from ‘Fr An’ aka Anna, who choose their love of reading as the basis of their design. Previously known as Reading, Reading and Reading! the set featured a cosy nook to get lost in a book. The final set, which now goes by the name ‘Books Are My Passion’ doesn’t stray that far from Anna’s original design.
The set is built on a 12×12 base which becomes the home of a tall book shelf, table and comfy armchair. Those smaller parts of the build are added to the base via jumper plates and studs. Just like the original design, the book shelf is reached by a tall ladder, this has been shifted to the right hand side of the build and is clipped in place behind the chair. The main focus of the build is a tall wood shelf filled with books. Similar means of showcasing books have appeared in many other LEGO sets. So a mixture of flat tiles, plates and and lipped plates are combined to give the selected of ‘reads’ on offer some texture. This works extremely and gives the impression of different books filling the shelf. The only thing which doesn’t work as well are the use of 1×1 ‘loaf’ bricks. The curve is perfect for replicating and old large volume book, however as two elements are stacked. The split between the two elements break the illusion.
The set still features a lone minifigure which a is obvious considering this is a set celebrating being single. This uses elements from other sets including the sweatshirt-style orange and yellow checkered torso. This has been used in six other sets including the few of the seasonal set. It’s a fitting style for the build’s setting. Overall the minifigure has a passing resemblance to the set’s fan designer. The LEGO Ideas ‘Books Are My Passion’ GWP set will be available from October 28th.
