As tickets go on sale for the Wicked film today, it’s the perfect time to take a look at another of the new LEGO® playsets inspired by the Wizard of Oz prequel. Unlike the other sets in the new theme, this one features a play scene hidden within a travel case. It’s similar to some of the LEGO Disney sets which combine objects with scenes from the films they are inspired by. The set is noted to be based on both Glinda and Elphaba’s college dorm room but as you’ll soon see, it tips in favour of one particular witch. Here’s a closer look at Glinda & Elphaba’s Dormitory set.

The set is styled to look like a luggage case which can be opened up to reveal a scene recreating Glinda and Elphaba’s room at Shiz University. It’s split into three sections which are all connected together. When fully closed they form the exterior of an old fashion style travel case. This can even be locked thanks to some Technic elements and a key. But something is interesting connected to the lock, a newish plate element. It’s similar to a 2×2 plate with 2 studs but the edge with no studs has a fancy curved design. It’s more of an ornate piece piece than something which could prove useful elsewhere. It’s previously been used in the Monkie Kid sets.

Sitting on top of the case are a trio of buildable objects connected to both of the characters. These include a pink rose, which looks very similar to the roses found in the Botanical Collection Rose Bouquet. This flower is combined with the new transparent green leaf elements. The rose is joined by a green vial of potion and a circular hat box-style pot, which doubles as extra storage. All three of these builds can be connected to the top of the case but can be easily removed.

Pulling out the two smaller sections of the case reveals a scene from the Wicked movie. The two smaller sections double up as bedrooms, on the left is Glinda’s room and on the right is Elphaba’s. But in all honesty, the entire room seems to have been devoted to Glinda. That’s certainly the case with the larger central sections, which feature more of Glinda’s luggage on a turntable. There are some nice little features found inside the set, I like the little flowery elements used for the wall lights and the shiny stickers used for both the mirrors and some of the wall decorations add a little extra detail.

As you’d expect from a set inspired by their dormitory, both Glinda and Elphaba are featured in the set as mini-dolls. They both have two different outfits to wear and surprisingly, all four of them are unique to this set. The standard outfits include a pink dress for Glinda. For Elphaba, her standard outfit is a little more suitable for a place of learning with a blue dress. You can then switch outfits for both characters. They both use the same heads, with Elphaba having the addition of her iconic witch’s hat. Glinda’s alternate outfit is a pink crop top and shorts. Elphaba’s different threads make her look more like her iconic appearance from the original Wizard of Oz film. Although there is a similar outfit in another set, this one is unique to this set. When the different legs and torsos are not ‘in use’ they can be stored in the hat box.

Overall the set doesn’t really offer much in terms of play features, especially in terms of the interior. The outside and the extra goodies on top of the case are what interest me the most. Despite the name of the set and the fact it features both main characters, it’s certainly more themed towards Glinda. Of course with the set being inspired by the film and from moments seen in the trailer, Glinda’s character does appear to take over, so the set reflects that. Still, I would like to have seen a little more of Elphaba’s influence in the set. This set and the rest of the Wicked range, are available now.
