LEGOLAND Windsor Resort has announced a trial of a voluntary digital detox service for families who stay at its new Woodland Village accommodation when it opens on Friday 24 May. The trial service encouraging families to take time out from smartphone scrolling to spend more play time together has been announced after new research found that 33 per cent of parents admitted to missing out on important moments with their kids because they were too busy on their phones. Instead of being tied to tech, those who stay at the new Woodland Village can explore nature and get creative with LEGO® bricks. The LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort will power up play time when its new holiday village opens on Friday 24 May, after announcing a trial voluntary digital detox service.

Families who book a stay at the UK’s first LEGO® Woodland themed holiday village are being encouraged to swap smartphone scrolling for more family play time after a new poll found a third of British parents (33 per cent)1 recognised that they had missed out on important moments because they were looking at their phone.

The initiative encouraging parents and children to disconnect to reconnect will offer guests resort-themed pouches where they can stow away their mobile phone devices. This could be for an hour at mealtimes, or anytime during their stay!

78 per cent of parents also admitted to catching themselves checking their phone when spending quality time with their children. When asked about their parents’ phone habits, more than half (56 per cent) of children aged 5-12 agreed that they would like their parents to spend less time on their phones and 52% of these respondents said this is because they would like to do more activities together.

Helen Bull, Divisional Director of the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort, said: “We live in an age with a digital focused generation of the future, which is why we carve out technology leading innovation at LEGOLAND Windsor including AR and smartphone led activity. However, as our research has shown – there is still a high demand for creative play and focused family time together.

“Our voluntary digital detox initiative will offer families staying at Woodland Village the chance to take some time out from screen time and scrolling whilst they build family memories that will last a lifetime”

This year alone, British parents on average will spend an astonishing 1,740.98 hours on their phones, equating to a whopping 72.54 of this year’s 366 days.

Of the parents that were surveyed, the top five ways they spend their screentime include:

  • Scrolling social media (61 per cent)
  • Playing games (34 per cent)
  • Texting family and friends (33 per cent)
  • Checking emails (33 per cent)
  • Working (26 per cent).

The ‘voluntary phone zip-away’ trial will begin when the LEGOLAND Woodland Village opens to the public from Friday 24th May which will feature 130 lodges, 20 camping barrels, an on-site restaurant (The Clubhouse Restaurant & Bar) and a family entertainment hub.

The LEGOLAND Woodland Village themed pouches will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and available to collect from the LEGOLAND Woodland Village reception desk for parents and their children to zip-away their phones.
